Carlson has coached for 26 seasons, beginning with seven years at Dundee. He coached 17 seasons at Monroe St. Mary Catholic, leading the Falcons to the 2014 Division 6 state championship.
St. Mary also reached the finals in 2005, 2009 and 2010. Giarmo, whose career record is 190-91, was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
The Detroit Lions honor a high school football coach each week during the season, with one coach earning Coach of the Year honors. Each weekly winner is awarded $2,000 for his school’s football program with the Coach of the Year program netting $4,000. The program is in its 22nd year and has awarded $411,000.
