
Jack Giarmo has led Gibraltar Carlson to a Top 10 ranking and the playoffs in only his second year as the head coach, earning the Detroit Lions Coach of the Week honor for Week 8.
Giarmo led the Marauders to a win over Wyandotte to improve to 7-1 and earn a No. 9 ranking in the Associated Press Division 3 poll. Carlson takes on Lincoln Park in the regular-season finale.
Carlson has coached for 26 seasons, beginning with seven years at Dundee. He coached 17 seasons at Monroe St. Mary Catholic, leading the Falcons to the 2014 Division 6 state championship.
St. Mary also reached the finals in 2005, 2009 and 2010. Giarmo, whose career record is 190-91, was inducted into the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
The Detroit Lions honor a high school football coach each week during the season, with one coach earning Coach of the Year honors. Each weekly winner is awarded $2,000 for his school’s football program with the Coach of the Year program netting $4,000. The program is in its 22nd year and has awarded $411,000.
