Albert Breer joins Lions’ Tori Petry to talk Detroit football

Sports Illustrated Monday Morning Quarterback’s Albert Breer joins Detroit Lions’ multimedia journalist Tori Petry at the Senior Bowl to talk Detroit football.

In the video, Breer gives his opinion on the Lions 2018 season under first-year coach Matt Patricia, with the main takeaway being that he believes there was a “culture shock in the building” and there was some “push back from players” — as was expected with the change.

Breer followed that up by saying he believed the Lions are not in a rebuild and if they are “going where they want to go, then this (upcoming) season will be the season they turn the corner.”

When the conversation shifted to the Lions hiring new offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Breer had a very interesting take on the hire: “What I was impressed with, with what Matt (Patricia) did was it really looked to me, and you sort of heard this a little bit too, he was looking at guys who he had trouble with as a defensive coach” as opposed to hiring a coach from the Patriot coaching tree.

When asked about the running game, Breer pointed to his report in an MMQB article about offensive line coach Jeff Davidson assisting with interviews, indicating the team is focused on making the running game a priority and “it was part reason of why there was friction between Matt (Patricia) and (former OC) Jim Bob Cooter.”

After expanding on Bevell’s impact on the running game in 2019, Breer closes the interview by looking towards the NFL Draft saying he expects the team to focus on “a defensive difference maker or two.”
